English-Irish/Irish-English dictionary.
This extremely popular dictionary
uniquely features phonetic notation in
Irish-English section.
The aim of this dictionary is to meet the
ordinary needs of school-goers and of the
general public. It comprises a wide and
useful modern vocabulary in both Irish
and English.
It was felt that mere word-lists would not
achieve the dictionarys aim, given the
greatly differing characters of the two
languages involved, and consequently a
good sprinkling of exemplary phrases
occur throughout the work.
The Irish-English section has been
abstracted from Foclóir Gaeilge-Béarla
and supplemented by a number of new
terms which have since come into being,
mainly as a result of the work of An
Coiste Téarmaíochta (the Terminology
Committee of the Department of
Education).
This section also carries basic
grammatical data and, for the first time
ever in a work of this nature, each
headword is accompanied by a phonetic
description.
Grammatical detail is sparser in the
English-Irish section, and users are
referred to the Irish-English section for
further elucidation.
Geographical names, languages etc. are
to be found in separate appendices.
